CHATFACE
2013

An experimental art television channel and talkshow utilizing Facebook as a programming platform. Hosted by curator Chloe Flores' Facebook page as an online artist-in-residence project for the month of July, it featured 11 extended CHAT interviews and over 25 artist-programmed CHANNELS.

CHATFACE was a month-long experiment in media broadcasting, leveraging a Facebook page to hold "CHAT" interviews with contemporary artists and curators, and including special guests to program content "CHANNELS."

I was invited by Los Angeles-based curator Chloe Flores to utliize her Facebook page as an avatar and decided to transform it into an online "television" program. CHATFACE evolved from my interest in an existing social network that everyone loves to hate but uses for various reasons. By analyzing the limitations and constraints of this platform, I conducted interviews with key colleagues all over the world, inviting them to a dialogue that took place in the "comments" section of a post. As a live format, other Facebook users could "tune in" and watch the conversations unfold in real time. The resulting rhizomatic, even anarchic discussions were directly influenced by the Facebook platform and became a mediated overlay to the CHAT communications.

CHATFACE "CHANNELS" were hosted several times a week by a rotating cast of artists, who programmed their streams by posting musings, images, texts, and videos, providing the audience with a 24-hour window of content much like a cable-access channel would.

CHATFACE is currently in the process of being archived so that the content can be accessed outside of Facebook, and may even turn into a "syndicated" or reprinted format in some way.

Special thanks to host Chloe Flores, CHAT guests Anthony Discenza, Steven Wolf, Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour, Sam Gould, Berin Golonu, Anuradha Vikram, David Spalding, Michal Wisniowski and Pio Bujak, and R.E.P. (Ukraine). CHANNEL programmers included Ida Roden, Milos Zahradka, Neil LeDoux, Marcella Faustini, Omar Mismar, Diedrick Brackens, Noah Krell, Travis Meinolf, Joseph Thomas, Dorothy Santos, Laura Onsale (Kim), Max Esplin, Irina Contreras, Celeste Christie, Pio Bujak, Michal Wisniowski, Stephanie Syjuco, and Valerie Soe.
